In 2018, during a visit to the town of Tulum (Quintana-Roo, Mexico), Dance to the People was introduced to the neighborhoods called Invasiones by Chilean Photographer Danny Alveal Aravena. He had been doing photojournalism on the subject of increased migration of people from Chiapas and Yucatan to the Caribbean coast to find work in the tourism and construction industries. Our first collaboration consisted of a street performance in one of the Invasiones during which I collected found objects and trash, and built with them a stage to perform a dance. Although the name “Invasión” comes from the common Mexican way to denominate illegally occupied lands, its inhabitants do not see themselves as “invaders”. Each neighborhood has its name. Dance to the People has worked primarily in the Pantera and Arrecifes neighborhoods (Colonias). |
