Labor/Trabajo
During the months of January through May 2023 Dance to the People established their residency at the basement of Grace Exhibition Space, in New York's East Village.
Because the space had been previously used to store a large amount of unused objects forgotten throughout the years by artists, a lot of the work during the first months was of cleaning and organizing.
2023 was a year of adjustments for DTTP members, as some of us had just entered parenthood. This brought about reflections around care, unpaid domestic labor, nesting and others. Violeta, mother of a then 9 year old, said: “To me, working is rest”, meaning that labor done outside the home offered relief.
For many hours, Maira Duarte, Violeta Tellez, and Joanna Stone, collaborated in the making of a multi-person trash creature made of hundreds of black plastic bags sewn into a piece of found fabric.
The project culminated in a performance that explored the themes of life and death in the context of the disappearances of factory women in the borderlands of US-Mexico.
